A Christmas Walk

by

Sam Wilkinson

I’ve been sitting here for hours

Travelling far inside my mind

Thinking of all the things to come

And all the things I’ve left behind.

I dream another world

Where the stars are all aligned

And it all goes fine.

I lace up my old winter boots

Stumble out the door

Walk through the churchyard

And I hear the choir call

But I don’t stop

Cos I’m sure I’ve heard it all before.

Behind an icy window

I see a Christmas tree

Beneath the baubles

A child dreams

Then turns his eyes

Towards the TV screen

An advert comes and fills his head

And he dreams for that instead.

Hold ‘em tight at Christmas

Catch each other if you fall

And if your dreams seem far away

You can laugh about the good old days

Till the new ones Make you smile even more.

“It’ll all be done by Christmas lads,

It’s gonna be alright.”

I hear the general calling

From the ground where he now lies.

And the soldiers tell me softly

All the things they wish they’d said

So I set myself a promise,

I’ll never let a moment slip away,

I’ll savour every day.

Hold ‘em tight at Christmas

Who else is gonna tell them how you feel

Though the wind will blow

And the sun won't always show

Love is something nobody can steal.

I find myself knocking on the door of someone

I loved so dearly

But let so nearly fade away.

An old friend I hadn’t seen in so many days

Who brought me in warm with a hug and a smile

And we spoke through the night

As our memories piled

And we laughed and we danced by the fireside

With nothing to prove and nothing to hide

And we sang side by side.

Hold ‘em tight at Christmas.

Time moves on and on and on.

Yes hold ‘em tight, don’t let ‘em go,

Love is all you need, you know,

Yes hold ‘em tight

Cos love is all you need.

Yes hold ‘em tight cos love is all you need.

Yes, hold 'em tight cos love is all we need.
